On Collecting Coins

We're pretty much aware that most coin collectors start collecting coins when they either a.) found an interesting coin, or b.) inherited or acquired a yet incomplete set that has caught their fancy because of their value. You may think that the coin is simply pretty or interesting, or you may think that it would be good investment. Either way, this is how you come to be a coin collector.

A lot of coin collectors are what we refer to as “hoarders”. Hoarders are indiscriminate collectors – some coin collectors tend to look down on them for this. Hoarders tend to not focus on a particular grouping of coins and instead pick up or acquire any interesting or special coins that they may come across. They don't care; as long as it is special, they will have them and keep them.

Investors and hard-core collectors are a little more strict with their collections. Often, they would value coin sets – that is, coins that have themes – over anything else. They are more strict about the quality of the coin pieces, as this is a merit to their collection. Very much specific about the coins that they would like to get their hands on, collectors like these are often more learned and specialized.
